Household problems don’t follow a 9 to 5 schedule. Some emergencies, such as a gas leak, pipe burst, roof leak or bats in the belfry, just can’t wait until morning.
Angie’s List member Darlene Moore of Oakland, California, called AKK Builders, Plumbing and Water Heaters in San Leandro, California, when she needed immediate assistance with a gas leak.
“I was without heat, hot water or the ability to use fireplaces or stoves, and it was cold outside,” she says. “They were very thorough and even helped me with my warranty claim by getting on the phone with the insurance company after hours.” She says AKK immediately repaired the problem and restored her gas for $218, and didn’t charge an additional fee.
Nearly 65,000 service providers on Angie’s List say they offer emergency service in their profiles for a variety of categories, including plumbing, heating and air conditioning, roofing and pest control.
Rita Nowicki, office manager for Freedom Heating & Cooling in Franklin Park, Illinois, says owner Pete Fiorentino places a high value on answering emergency calls no matter what time of day or night, particularly since HVAC problems can pose serious issues. An A/C failure in the hottest days of summer or the heating going out in bitter cold winter can put lives in danger.
“We get a few emergency calls a week, especially in the busy season, when either someone’s heat has gone out in the winter or their cooling goes out in the hottest days of summer,” she says. “We’ll get a call from someone saying, ‘My home is freezing and I have a newborn baby,’ and it’s important to get out there right away.”
Certain problems, such as gas leaks, pose an even more immediate need for service when it comes to HVAC systems, stoves, water heaters and gas fireplaces. Gas leaks in particular can lead to disaster. “If you smell gas, don’t wait at all,” Nowicki says. “Open the windows, get out of the house right away, and call for help. People sometimes tend to worry about money before their health, but with gas leaks, shut the thing off. It’s too important.”
