What are dental implants?

The loss of a tooth is not only a cause for embarrassment; it can be a threat to your health. The gap left by a missing tooth in your jaw line can lead to loss of bone which, in turn, can lead to further health complications.

Many dentists are recommending implants as a preferred remedy over dentures because they can eliminate difficulties associated with dentures, such as slippage or impaired speech. They also allow the patient to eat a wider variety of foods.

What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are replacement tooth roots, usually made of titanium and placed into the jaw bone to cover up the hole from a missing tooth.

How are they installed?
Using a local anesthesia, an oral surgeon will make impressions of your teeth, including a model of your bite, and then implant the titanium post into the vacancy. After the site heals, the replacement tooth or crown is attached to the inserted post. The healing process can take up to 12 weeks and pain is managed with over-the-counter pain medicine.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?
Anyone healthy enough to have a routine dental extraction may be a good candidate for dental implants. However, patients who are heavy smokers, have uncontrolled diabetes or a heart condition are among those who need to seek their physician’s advice before undergoing a dental implant procedure.

Is extra care required for the implant?
Normally, dental implants require no more care than natural teeth. Your dentist might recommend more frequent visits to the office to monitor the implants.
