Virginia ceramic tile team marches all the way to excellence
Frank Brennan and his wife, Sabine, help the Woodbridge (Va.) Senior High School marching band with volunteer work and an annual donation. During the workday, they stay in tune with their clients’ needs as co-owners of FBT Tile & Marble.
If Angie’s List member reviews are any indication, the Brennans continue to hit the right notes. The company, which started in 2003, won Super Service Awards each of the last two years. FBT moved to its current Woodbridge office last year after working out of the Brennans’ home, and the company’s grown from one to 12 employees since starting.
2012 Angie’s List Super Service Award winner:
Owner Frank Brennan of Woodbridge, Va., founded the company in 2003, and FBT received the Super Service Award in 2011 and 2012 and was a Best Contractor in 2012.
“I did everything when we started, but I soon learned that wasn’t going to be easy,” Brennan says, laughing. He hired Nelson Pena as a ceramic tile installer about six months after opening, and Pena has worked with Brennan since.
Brennan began working in tile when his older brother, Brian, hired him as a helper while Frank was still in high school. Eventually, Brian started his own business, and his younger brother moved from installer to foreman. After about five years, the younger Brennan decided to branch out on his own.
He says his company stands out by emphasizing guaranteed start and finish dates, keeping a crew on-site every day and responding immediately to clients’ concerns. “Some contractors show up the first day, and you won’t see them again for a few days or weeks,” Brennan says.
Alexandria, Va., member Susan Askew noticed that effort when FBT installed a tile floor in her kitchen. “I had a tight time frame as I was putting a house on the market,” Askew says. “They indicated they would make a special effort to get to me quickly, and they lived up to their word. They were prepared and ready to go from day one. The end result was a stunning new tile floor.”
Annandale, Va., member Carl Hoffman appreciated Brennan’s involvement with his bathroom remodel and the company’s follow-up attempts to correct issues that Hoffman says the company didn’t cause. “[Brennan] visited nearly every day to personally review the status of the work,” Hoffman says. “They’ve replaced my toilet three times in an effort to find one that isn’t defective at no cost to me, and the toilet issue is in no way FBT’s fault.”
FBT, an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Contractor, also gives to the American Cancer Society and the ASPCA and donates meals to families during the holidays.
In the meantime, Brennan is grooming two of his sons, 17-year-old Colin and 14-year-old Gavin, who both work with the company during the summer months. Colin and Gavin also march in the Woodbridge Senior High band, while 20-year-old son Eli marched at nearby Forest Park High School before graduation. “I hope one of them will take over the business one day,” the father says.
The Super Service Award recognizes contractors and health care providers that have maintained a stellar service rating on Angie’s List throughout the past year. Be sure to always check the List before hiring, however, as ratings can and do change.
