Nothing helped with those pesky flying boxelder bugs that love to settle on the sun-warmed brick on the front of our house (and fly in every time the front door opened)...then I discovered putting some dish soap in a spray bottle filled with water worked wonderfully...so every autumn (when they come out), I just spray them and they are done - almost instantly!

Subject: Other use

Spraying lemon dish detergent on your lawn helps get rids of bugs there as well as breaks up hard clay soils. It will take a while to break down the soil, but in some places this is a great benefit to plants and grass.

You missed a big one, I always take out greasy spots from cotton , cotton knits, tee shirts and even rayon with Dawn dishwashing liquid! Just rub some into the spot, wait 20 min to a couple of days and wash!

I have used Dawn dish soap to make it easier to open and close my patio doors. Pour on the rails at the bottom and slide back and forth till fully distributed.

Subject: Dawn for dogs

I have washed my dogs with Dawn before.
Today I was desperate.
My little dog got a good bath yesterday. Perfectly clean and happy for awhile. I think our flea problem is just out of control. I decided to use a rag wet and soapy with Dawn to wipe his coat down. Just to see...I let it sit for 10 minutes then wiped him down with a clean moist rag (I saw 20+ dead fleas on the soapy rag after finishing, then 20+ dead fleas on the clean moist rag!)
This is the first time in weeks he has sat down for more than an hour without scratching uncontrollably!

i have used a mixture of dawn dish detergent and fresh hydrogen peroxide 50/50... to get stains out of everything from cotton, silk etc. My friend got red wine out of a cashmere sweater! Make in small batches. Fresh is best. No need to use a huge amount. I mix it in a small empty squeeze bottle.

Then wash as usual in machine with regular clothes detergent.
Some old oil stains took two treatment.

Thank you for a very informative article, wish you would it listed the formula ratio for each use like the people did in the comments.

I had thousands of rain tree black bugs like the box elder bugs and tried everything, until I learned that using a couple of teaspoons of dawn in a gallon sprayer kill them almost instantly ( it has to be spray on them). I had to cut several rain trees because the seed attracts the bugs. After months of daily spraying I still see some, but have my sprayer bottle ready to go. Thanks again for great comments/tips.

Subject: How a pulmber told me to use Dawn Dish Soa[

A couple of years ago my plumber came to work on my garbage disposal. While he was there he noticed a container of toilet bowl cleaner with harsh ingredients in it. He said to use Dawn in toilets and drains to unclog them. It really works and so much better for the environment. I just squirt a few drops in the toilet bowl and let it sit for a while. I can then flush the toilet with no problems. Same for drains just put a bit of Dawn down the drain and allow it to sit for a while and then turn on the water. If the drain is not fully cleared do this again. Dawn will unplug the drain

If you like foam handwashing soap, take an empty foam soap container. Fill 1/4-1/3 with dishwashing detergent and fill the remainder with water. Shake to combine. May have to adjust amounts depending on size of container used and thickness of foam. If too much detergent, will not foam so add a little more water. Some detergents say "hand soap" in small letters on the bottle. A little detergent goes a long way and saves buying refills of hand soap.

I shower with laundry detergent (natural, not harsh) after gardening just in case I had any contact with poison ivy. Same theory and seems to work. My hair feels a bit like straw, but a good real shampoo and conditioner brings it back to normal.

To make your own grass and weed killer take 1 cup blue dawn dish soap plus 2 cups Epsom salt and dissolve in one gallon warm water. Put in a tank sprayer and spray unwanted weeds.

To make a soap scum busting agent, use 2 Tblsp blue dawn and 1/4 cup vinegar and 2 cups water. Spray on shower walls, let sit 5 minutes, then wipe and rinse. Keeps my glass shower door clear and sparkling.

While on vacation at a condo, we had occasion to call a maintenance man. When he came to take care of the problem, he also squirted a bit of Dawn into the garbage disposal, began running hot water, turned on the garbage disposal, and allowed the Dawn to suds up. He explained that by doing this twice a month, the grease build-up could be virtually eliminated.

Subject: Dawn vs grease

I've used Dawn dish washing liquid, for years, to erase 'ring around the collar' from dress shirts. Just a thin line of soap along the dirt, lightly rubbed in, then laundered as usual in the washing machine and the shirt comes out as good as new.

Benny

Subject: Yup it will and then some.

Oh it will clean the grease. It will also clean the bearings out of your disposal especially with hot water. Read your instructions that came with your disposal. Never run hot water in your disposal while the disposal is on, let alone grease cutter. Cold water will cause grease to ball up ad move down the drainage system better.

We've been using Dawn forever. And, when it comes to box elder bugs, (those pesky black and red things that can cover the sunny side of a house), we always expect, and get, instant results from a spray bottle with a tbsp or two of Dawn in water.

Subject: Using Dawn to remove oil spots on concrete

This uses minimal elbow grease. First remove any liquid oil by absorbing with an absorbent (paper towel, oil-sorb, etc.) Then mix Dawn with an absorbent material to make a paste and cover the oil spots with the paste. Let the paste dry and then peel or scrape it off. The faint spots remaining will generally fade away within a week. This works on old spots, too. For absorbent material, I have used oil-sorb and pulverized lime. Clay-type kitty litter should work as well.

Do NOT use liquid dishwasher soap or any dish soap that contains bleach or you may end up with a tie-dyed shirt. Unfortunately, I speak from experience.

Subject: The best hard water cleaner ever

I got a tip that I HAVE to share. I live in a town with horribly hard water - terrible and have no water softener and GLASS shower doors. I had basically given up on my shower doors ever being remotely clear, forget about spot free. I read a tip and figured it was worth a shot. I took one cup of dawn liquid soap, and poured it into an empty 32oz spray bottle and filled the rest with white vinegar. Mixed lightly and sprayed my shower doors. I let it sit a little while and then wiped down with a sponge. My shower doors are completely CLEAR!!! It is a miracle! Now I use it once a week and rinse it off and they stay clear. It's amazing.

On a very related note, bacon grease is an excellent grease cutter and even removes that pesky glue that labels are stuck on just about everything you purchase. I heat the label with a hair dryer to soften the glue and remove the label. Then the bacon grease cuts the balance of the glue that was left behind.

The very best thing to use to remove the glued on tags from newly purchased items.......Lighter fluid. Never damages glass, plastic, fabric. nothing. Is also great to remove glue, black shoe marks on floors without any damage. Grease on carpet. Have been using for forty years and have noticed is getting harder to find. Don't know what I am going to do when everyone stops smoking. Can presently only find in hardware stores and smoke shops.

Subject: Another use for Dishwashing Liquid

Dishwashing liquid is also really good for cleaning paint brushes. If the paint is latex, use it directly to clean the brush. If the paint is oil-based, clean the brush first with paint thinner and then do a final cleaning with dishwashing liquid.

Blue Dawn is used world wide on oiled birds and mammals. So it is safe to use on cats and dogs to kill fleas and remove sticky stuff. Should not be used as regular pet shampoo dice it might dry out skin.

Subject: Dawn on pets!!

I bathed my dogs in flee and tick. My dog was laying on the floor lethargic. I called the company that made the flee and tick. They told me to give her a bath in Blue dawn dish soap immediately. Had I not called the company my dog would have died. She came around as the evening went on and is no longer given any flea or tick shampoo and includes any collars. My dogs are given a bath with a 8 ounce of baby shampoo with 10 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of Melaluca oil. The flees and ticks are killed the same as a flee and tick shampoo, Do not doubt the Dawn shampoo as I have talked to several vets and they all agreed that saved my dogs live.

Janice Murphy

Subject: Dawn on Pets?

We have used both Dawn and Joy dish liquid on our dogs for over 25 years for flea problems, some oily coat problems, and a few environmental problems our dogs encountered. I have talked with our vets about this, explaining that the dish liquids kill the fleas faster and better than flea shampoos and I don't need much to bathe a dog the size of a male Golden Retriever as I do with flea shampoos. And I do make sure I *thoroughly* rinse. Our vets have never had a problem with this. One vet did recommend Selsun Blue for the oily coat problem, but a little Dawn would work, too. Always check with your vet first in case your pet could have an allergy and check for any allergic reactions during and after washing.

Subject: Glass window cleaner

It's somewhat implied by the suggested uses, but use a couple drops of dawn in a spray bottle to clean the outside glass on your windows. Wipe them clean and then lightly buff to make it perfectly clear (if you don't have a wiping tool). It was original rec to me by a window washer. The extra bonus is that when it rains, any residual dawn left in the windows cleans them a second time.

Dawn is the most effective agent for degreasing birds caught in an oil spill. I figure that if I keep buying it, it will be available for my friends who live on the coast and do bird rescue. Of course, it performs well for me in every use!

Lizy

Subject: Dog wash

When washing the dog, you need to get all of the soap off, especially dish soap. A rinse with vinegar and water will do it; The acetic acid in the vinegar breaks up the surfactants in dish soap. Keeping the dog standing around whilst trying to get dish soap off can take forever, this speeds things up. Use a plastic pitcher or some such to mix your vinegar and pour it over the dog.

You may want to end with a second sudsing with oatmeal shampoo, or use a spray on skin solution. Dogs can get dry skin too, and combined with any flea exposure it could get nasty.

I hear all this about Dawn,my issue is when I was younger my grandparents used Palmolive and I love how it smells!Help I am not sure how effective it is at cutting grease. What do I do?

Wendy

Subject: Palmolove

Go with the one you prefer. Back in the early 1970's, Consumer Reports rated Palmolive dish detergent #1 in the US in grease cutting ability. While it may have been reformulated with extra water, like #2 rated Ajax was in 2010, you can increase the amount you use when following recipes using Dawn, to compensate for any reduced grease cutting ability.

Put a little in a large spray bottle and fill with water. It's the best for killing ants on kitchen counters where you are hesitant to use insecticides. Kills ants INSTANTLY! Got this tip from my pest control professional who told me this is what they have to use in hospital operating rooms.

Dawn is great for washing windows: Mix one teaspoon of Dawn and a gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and, leaving excess moisture in it, wash the window. Use a squeegee to remove the solution. It's quick and easy and works every time: No streaking, smudges, or lint! This tip was given to me by a professional window washer.

The same solution is great to clean furniture and to wash floors and walls. However, for these cleaning tasks, the cloth should be wrung out until it is just damp.

Subject: Dawn Liquid

Dawn liquid is sprayed on golf course greens to kill moss successfully. I personally use a drop or two in my fertilizer and insecticide sprays on landscape plants and flowers as a wetting agent to spread the spray solution across the leaf more evenly. Phytotoxicity occurs if you use too much Dawn Liquid or spray in very warm weather or in mid day where the sun will also burn the leaves of plants.

If your pet is sprayed by a skunk, here's what to do:
Supplies:
Large bucket
1 quart of NEW hydrogen peroxide
1 cup baking soda
1 tablespoon Dawn dish detergent
(Remember, when wildlife gets caught up in an oil spill, they use Dawn to clean the oil off the birds. Skunk spray is oil-based...)
Mix above ingredients.
Sponge and lather main affected are, being VERY CAREFUL not to get into your pet's eyes. Let it sit 10-15 minutes. Rinse and repeat.
This will eliminate the majority of the smell. It will take a few weeks for the rest to dissipate, but at least you'll be able to let your pet back in the house after s/he dries!

I used Dawn full strength on my kitchen counters as the ants began their annual spring joy rides around my counters. IT WORKED! I just wiped the counters, especially near the back splash where I figure they come in. I left it without washing it off right away. For the first time in years, I didn't see any more. It was recommended to make a water and Dawn mixture. It's just in my DNA to go overboard sometimes. Try it both ways.

Subject: Dawn detergent has many uses...

We use Dawn for numerous uses around the house and farm. We have tried a huge number of cheaper liquid detergents and even more expensive detergents but none compare to Dawn. We keep a supply of it not only in the kitchen, but in the laundry room, bathrooms, with the auto cleaning and detailing supplies, with the weed and grass killer and use in combination with degreasers to remove oil stains on our driveway and other areas. Combined with Pro Shop towels, the Dawn is something we definitely have integrated into our lives.

I combine 50% dish soap and 50% white vinegar in a spray bottle and keep it in the bathroom. I spritz in the evening before going to bed, let it sit overnight, and rinse the scum away the next morning just before my shower. Requires very little elbow grease, and gets rid of the scum every time!

Subject: Stainless Steel sinks

If you have a coated, streaky, dull or stained stainless steel sink, use dawn or any other soap by coating surface with the liquid soap and leaving it on for a while. If it runs and leaves more streaks do it again but use a small piece of paper towel with water on and coat evenly leaving it on sink for a while. I do this every night when finished in Kitchen. Eventually it will help keep its original luster.

If the ducts are venting through a window I'm assuming the duct work is all easily accessible.  Lowe's and Home Depot sell a cleaning kit that uses an electric drill to spin the brush as it goes through the ductwork.  I've found it to work quite well and you can do it yourself.  It may take a few passes the first time to get everything out if it has been a while since it was last cleaned.  Just make sure you get all of the loose lint out after running the brush through from both ends and you're good to go.  Please note that if the line is not hard but rather a flex duct line you can easily puncture a whole in it with this kit and will do better to clean it by hand.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
