Understand your dentist's education
Going to the dentist is a much more pleasant experience than it used to be. It is hard to imagine the pain and discomfort experienced by those that needed dental work before the advent of local anesthetics. From the Middle Ages up until the 19th century, it was common for barbers to be dentists as well as surgeons.
Of course, dentistry is a lot more sophisticated thanks to the advent of modern tools, X-rays, medications and cosmetic procedures. Fortunately for patients, dentists also have the methods to make the experience as painless and relaxing as possible for the patient.
When visiting a Boston dentist, it is important to understand the services you may need in order to make sure you select the right one. It is also important to understand their credentials in providing an array of services. Dentists who have reached the pinnacle of achievement in their field are board-certified general dentists. Here are the requirements for board certification.
- Education – Any board certified dentist must have a bachelor’s degree and a DDS or DMD from an accredited dental school. These are basic requirements for any professional dentist whether they are board certified or not.
- Residency – The American Board of General Dentistry also requires members to complete residency after their education is complete.
- Written exam – To become board certified the dentist must also pass a written exam after completing education. This exam is given by the ABGD.
- Oral exam – After passing the written exam, the dentist seeking board certification must also pass an oral exam. This is the final phase of the testing and is taken in front of board members of the ABGD.
A dentist will become a member of the ABGD after completing all phases mentioned above. This means that they are in the upper echelon of dentists in the United States. You can be sure that you are in good hands with regards to your oral health if you are receiving care from a board certified dentist. You can also be sure that your dentist is up to date on all the latest technology and methods for oral care.
