Pediatric Associates give kids first and last word
Some pediatricians may forget that children are their patients, but parents say not so at Bellevue’s Pediatric Associates. “[Doctors and nurses] don’t ask me how [my daughter] is doing, they ask her,” says member Karen Rassilyer of Kent. She says she likes this because it puts her daughter at ease.
“We talk to children ... as soon as they are able to talk about what’s going on,” says Dr. Jean Sahs, adding that doctors tell kids how the body works, what makes it sick and ways to correct the problem.
Sahs says kids don’t always tell parents why they want to see a doctor and parents often don’t recognize how family problems affect children. Giving children freedom to speak for themselves helps doctors address what’s wrong.
Because parents also need reassurance that a sniffle or ear infection isn’t something more, the practice, which has multiple Page of Happiness nominations, is open every day and has 24-hour physician on-call service.
Mercer Island member James Nakatsu says the staff is great with kids. “Immunizations are administered by the nurses, and they’re very good at keeping the tension low for an otherwise anxious moment,” he says.
