Doctors step up service by kneeling to kids' level
The respect the doctors at Step Pediatrics have for parents and their children is part of why Woodlands member Penny Boehm took her daughter there until she was too old to go anymore. “They can make a kid feel comfortable,” Boehm says. “They always treated her like she was valuable and respected.”
A pediatrician has two patients — the child and the adult caregiver — and must know how to communicate with both, says Dr. Joseph Edralin, one of three pediatricians at the practice.
The focus on preventive care makes pediatricians unique, he adds. “We’re not treating a disease,” Edralin says. “We’re taking care of a patient’s whole life.”
Sometimes concentrating on keeping young children healthy means doctors must come down to the patients’ level.
“It’s difficult to set a toddler or baby up on the examining [table],” Edralin says. “If I [have] a kid playing on the floor, I will get down with them."
Spring member Raquel Simmons appreciates the informal approach. “My daughter’s 4 and ... not capable of vocalizing what’s the matter,” Simmons says. “He has to get down and talk to her and at the same time talk to me as the mom about what’s going on. He does an awesome job with it.”
