Attentive care defines Aurora pediatricians
Kristin Nelson, the mother of 13-year-old twins with autism, says Dr. Lorene Eckberg of Dreyer Medical Clinic — Fox Valley Villages stands out for her attentive care. “A lot of doctors are uncomfortable with autism, even pediatricians, but Dr. Eckberg is fantastic at making my kids comfortable,” the Aurora member says. “She speaks directly to them, which a lot of people don’t do with disabled kids. She listens to what I have to say and makes me feel like a partner.”
Eckberg, a 24-year veteran pediatrician, says experience drives her approach. “I’ve fine-tuned a lot of listening to what parents and children say,” she says. “Even if it’s a 3-year-old, I want them to be involved and I love to hear them talk to me.”
Dr. Julie Overcash, Dreyer’s medical director for women’s and children’s services, says this kind of attention exemplifies the Dreyer way. “It’s important that each patient feel like they’re the most special person — which they are,” she says.
The 92-year-old clinic engages in frequent community service, including talks at schools, free clinics and providing physicals for children with special needs.
