When planning a big move, there are things you should do and things you don't want to do. Follow these tips to ensure an organized, stress-free move.

The do’s

  • Stage your house for sale. It might help you receive an offer quicker, which can reduce the stress of moving.
  • Write down paint colors that you like in your current house. You’ll be able to get a couple of rooms painted and put together just like they were in the old house. It’s great to feel at home in a new place.
  • Label things well as you remove and pack them. Label all the curtain rods so there is no confusion about what goes where. Label all the computer and electronic cords. Bag and label all the hooks/nails of shelves that are removed from the walls and tape them to the shelf they went to.
  • Travel with an emergency folder. Some examples of what put in it: a to do list, moving company information, vital records, bills to pay, insurance information and receipts needed to be turned in for reimbursement.
  • Accept help. Moving is a huge undertaking and no one can do it alone. Be thankful for great friends, family and neighbors who pitch in on both ends of the move to make it a smoother transition.

The don’ts

  • Don’t forget to check the reviews online before deciding on a mover. Hiring the wrong one might cause avoidable problems.
  • Don't be afraid of over packing clothes for the trip. You’ll be glad you did should the movers arrive at your new house late.
  • Don’t paint an entire room without first purchasing a sample can and trying it out. Lighting is different in the store. It also always looks different on the swatch than it does on the wall.
  • Don't forget to order your garbage service before you arrive to your new house. Garbage stacks up quickly, especially when unpacking. Hot humid weather and a garage full of garbage are not a great combination.
  • Don’t expect to get settled overnight. Moving is hard work and time consuming. Give yourself time to get things settled and adjust to your new surroundings.
