COMPLAINT: Marge Mainguth, Brandon
"I hired Affordable Roofing Systems Inc. to fix leaks in my roof. Two months after the work was completed, the leaks came back in exactly the same places. I've called them several times. The company said someone would call me and come out, but that never happened."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a $993 refund."
RESPONSE: Rick Mellette, president, Affordable Roofing Systems Inc.
"The contract was for repair of a specific area of the roof. The company who originally installed the roof was unlicensed and didn't pull permits. The member needs a new roof. She'll continue to have problems until the roof is completely replaced, because the original installation was incorrect. We've made her aware of this. She knew before we made the specific repair that the roof was bad! The repair was temporary for this area."
HVAC quote under scrutiny by homeowner
COMPLAINT: Sandra Kelly, Palm Harbor
"ABS Air Conditioning Co. advised me that my HVAC system needed to have vents 'taped and masticed' so it would operate more efficiently. They told me the job would require two of their technicians and would take four to six hours to complete. Based on this quote and time estimate, I approved the work; however, it only took one technician to do the job in two hours.
I feel they misled me during the quote process about the scope of the work. I attempted to dispute the charge with my credit card company. The credit card company advised that since the work was done to my satisfaction, the dispute was between me and ABS. The owner of ABS told me she would work with me to resolve the excessive charge of $1,695 for two hours of work, but then refused to take my calls.
I paid $847.50 per hour for their work, although their original quote translated to $211.88 per hour. The company told my credit card company that they'd accept half of the amount quoted, but I still feel that's excessive. I proposed paying ABS $212 per hour for the two hours they were here, totaling $424."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like ABS to accept $424 for the work performed. I'd also like ABS to cancel my service agreement with them and issue a $186 refund for the remaining year left in the agreement."
RESPONSE: Maryann Sabo, president, ABS Air Conditioning Co.
"We contracted with Ms. Kelly to perform a service, and we performed this service! Any previous offers to resolve this issue are voided at this time."
Moving company allegedly breaks furniture
COMPLAINT: James Wygand, The Woodlands, Texas
"I hired Discount Moving in Clearwater to move my belongings from Sarasota to Houston. The company divided the load into two trucks. They broke many of the items in the first truck, including an antique desk, dresser and a breakfast table. They also bent a stroller and broke a kitchen scale.
They packed things without protecting them - they just stacked everything up. The second truck still hasn't arrived, and they're not answering my calls anymore. When I questioned them, they acted like they thought it was funny and they didn't care."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want the rest of my property delivered, a written apology and a $4,379.93 refund."

Worst laid plans on flooring job
COMPLAINT: Gina Day, St. Petersburg
"I hired Floors-R-Us to remove my old hardwood floors and install new ones. When I scheduled the job, they told me it'd take four days, at the most, to complete the whole job. It ended up taking nine days, and the company was very difficult to get in touch with. The day they removed the floors, they called to say they couldn't come back until a couple of days later because the floors needed to air out.
I agreed to sign a waiver releasing them from any warranty if they'd lay the new floors the next day. They didn't show the day after laying the new floors, so I called. The man I spoke to was very rude and said they weren't coming back out for another two days. On the day they were supposed to finish, no one showed up. I finally got them to complete the job after several phone calls."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want $500 in compensation, given the amount of time and effort I had to expend to get the job completed in a reasonable time frame."
RESPONSE: Tony M. Phillips, office manager, Floors-R-Us
"The customer had severe moisture. We had to hold the job so it could be done to industry standards. This includes keeping the customer from being exposed to mold and protecting the quality of the product. The customer is happy with the final product, and we believe the report should reflect that."
