Sprinkler installer soaks homeowner

COMPLAINT: Rebecca Marcum, Knoxville, Tenn.
"Doug Kribbs of Doug Kribbs Landscaping verbally contracted with me to install a complete automated sprinkler system for my home for $2,800. He's been taking care of my weekly mowing since the summer of 2007. Believing he was reliable and trustworthy, I contracted with him for the sprinkler installation. He agreed to have the entire system completed in about a week.

I gave him a $1,400 check as a 50 percent deposit, which he took to my bank and cashed immediately. The work hasn't been performed. He left me one note stating he had a family emergency and would install the system about a week later. As of a month later, it still hasn't been done. I've been calling him regularly to see what the issue is and how he'd like to resolve it, but he doesn't return my calls. My 50 percent deposit check was cashed, and no services have been performed to date."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a full refund of the $1,400 deposit Mr. Kribbs received and cashed. In lieu of full payment immediately, I'm willing to accept minimum monthly repayments of $200 until the full amount is paid. The payments must, however, be regular and without interruption."

STATUS: Resolved
Marcum informed Angie's List that Kribbs reimbursed her $1,400, and she considers the matter closed.
