Skokie movers allegedly pad costs with extra blankets
COMPLAINT: Kelley Regan, Bolingbrook, Ill.
"The movers estimated they would use about 12 or 13 blankets, at a cost of $12 per blanket, to wrap the big furniture. Then they began wrapping everything, including items that needed no wrapping, with blankets, tape and plastic wrap. I did not ask for the additional packing services and was not consulted on the charge.
"After the move, they told me they used 42 blankets, plus I was charged for tape and plastic wrap. This totaled more than $600. The excessive packing added at least two hours, at $118 per hour, to the move."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like to pay for only the 12 or 13 pads as originally estimated. I also would like to be reimbursed for packing materials, presumably tape and wrap, for which I was charged with no explanation or forewarning."
RESPONSE: Julie Gold, general manager, Golan's Moving & Storage
"Each transaction that we enter into with consumers is preceded by both oral and written confirmation of moving procedures and likely costs. We apologize if the member did not feel adequately informed of our policies and procedures regarding the move.
"We will honor the request to reduce the moving blanket cost. Specifically, we will refund $342 upon return of the 32 moving pads. We will also credit $48 relating to the packing material, and have already credited $84 prior to this complaint. This is a total credit of $474. We apologize for any misunderstanding."
