Subject: Muffler noise

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT and whenever I turn on my car, a grumbling noise comes from the rear end of my car. Also makes my car idle a bit and sometimes dies. What could that be?

Subject: losing power

I have a 2001 holden astra. I put petrol in the night before and the next day it started losing power jerking and shaking. On a straight road it is fine but on hills it slows down to 20kms. And it makes a loud noise when I accelerate. What could this be?

Subject: similar issue last year

my 03 infiniti G35 was doing the same thing last April, it would jerk and shake, mostly at a complete stop though; or when Iwas decelerating. Most of the time it would start back up until a week later it wouldn't start at all.. thought the battery was junk, called AAA they came by tested the battery and it was fine, they even attempted a jump start but to no avail. Got it towed to a shop and found out it was something I believe was called the "crankshaft" or "crankshift" sensor, there was two of em and they were done for. I guess it was a recall on G35s at one point in time, but ofcourse it was not a lifetime recall and I was overdue the end date for it :/ Pretty costly repair, about 850 US If I can remember right. Probably couldve shopped around to MAYBE get it done cheaper but the car was dead, and I had already towed it twice at this point . K, I'm getting off topic, Could be that though. Ya never knnow. Now that I'm thinking about it it was definitely called the "crankshaft" sensor and there was 2 of em.

Subject: it could be so many things

it could be so many things however I had similar symptoms and my VSS (velocity sensor) was faulty. It was physically damaged so I had to replace it. I am not sure why it was physically damaged at the tip but I have to find out as replacing the VSS will not solve the root cause in my situation however if your VSS looks physically good then replacing more than likely will solve it for you. Typically costs around $20 US. Your ECU may have issues but typically they are OK and it is sensor or other parts of the vehicle that caused this issue. I know of another situation where the car battery caused this issue, check your car battery and also check to make sure there isn't a grounding issue - a cable that is loose or a cable to ground that is attached to something that has rusted.

Subject: Exhaust leak?

I drive a 2005 Subaru Outback that has two weak catalytic converters. Never had any problems before but now the entire car starts to shake when idling or accelerating and my car is losing power when driving up hill, I live in the mountains. I've been told several things that could be wrong such as needing a motor mount, replacing the catalytic converter, and it being a potential exhaust leak. Any thoughts?

Subject: Car making loud rattling

My car just started to make a very loud rattling noise when I start it up, and it continues while driving and accelerating can someone tell me what could be a cause for this? Any any and all assistance is appreciated.

Subject: Thanks for the post.The

Thanks for the post. The exhaust system of your car is one of the fundamental parts.Any complacency in its repair and maintenance could really result in a bad episode and also heavy expenses so it is always a better off idea to take care of it properly.

Subject: Bad exhaust

Washing my car today, I had a look at the exhaust and noticed crusty rust bits around the muffler and was wondering if this could be any noticeable leak or concern. I have been feeling a drop in power and a deeper sound coming from the exhaust.

Subject: muffler

I have a bad muffler, I can hear it rattlewhile driving. Can that be a issue. with it running bad? Like it has bad fuel.

Subject: Car Muffler

My Car Toyota Corolla NZE121 2003 model is having a leak at the rear joint. Took it to the garage, the mechanic said to weld it permanently. Is it a good solution? What might be the problem at the joint?

Subject: vibration

My car runs fine and today I started to hear this noise a vibration noise like a cell phone was under thefloor board. What could it be?

Subject: my car looses power as I accelerate

If I start the car in the morning, it will sound and move well, but after a short drive, it will start loosing power, giving a bad sound, doesnt move as I accelerate and consume more fuel. but if I should stop the car, put off the engine and start the engine again, it will continue moving well but if I should remove my leg from the accelerating pedal, it will loose power and change sound again until I turn off the ignation and turn it on again,, am really confused about this whole thing. it is a nissan pathfinder jeep 2003 model. I will be happy if I can get a solution here, thanks....

Subject: Cat Converter

I had a 2001 buick regal that stopped accelerating at about 20mph.Got worse and worse the longer I drove it (my girlfriend at the time kept pushing me for rides to work so I pushed the car way more than I should have). Your problem sounds a bit different than mine was but it also sounds similar. Could be a bad catalytic converter and maybe muffler.

Subject: That sounds like it has

That sounds like it has nothing to do with the topic of an exhaust leak or system, help your car out and go get it checked

Subject: mine (ish) too

I hope somebody can answer your question because it wound help with mine. Only thing i can offer is, in part your problem is a sensor due to the turn on and off the car (like restarting the computer)
My car starts fine but 20 min into my drive it loses power and when I stop and then go it cluncks to the next gear. Along with that I get a horrible headache by the time I get to work because of toxins in the car but I don't smell anything like gas or roften eggs.

Subject: Reduced acceleration

Our Mercedes Benz C class automatic Diesel started losing power upon acceleration. We took it to a main dealer, after diagnostic testing we had a complete exhaust system replaced, 1,000 miles later the same problem occurred, reduced power when accelerating. The dealer has said after further diagnostic testing it is the catalytic converter, is this right please.

Subject: I took my car to get it

I took my car to get it inspected and without hooking my car up to emissions they said I have an exhaust leak.....My car is not loud I have none of the symptoms above at all.....I looked under the car when I got home and everything looks fine.....I am going to have a muffler shop look at it but I do not think anything is wrong with it....I think.they should have just done the emissions test.....

Subject: Thank You!!

I appreciated all the information to bring my vehicle sooner and possible to a mechanic for get it fix. I knew it my car has a big problem with the muffler. lol
Thank you again!

I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.
