Siblings join forces to remodel their mom's kitchen
David Mclean and his two sisters wanted to give their mother a kitchen makeover in her Jacksonville, Fla., home.
As they dreamed about the project's scope, they knew the remodel should include "the works" (new cabinets, tile and crown molding) along with repairs to a damaged ceiling caused by a leaky roof over their mother’s most treasured room in the house.
The trio began to do some of the work themselves. They decided to rip down the old sheetrock from the ceiling and replace it with new material. That would allow them to easily install recessed lighting, a touch that would surely delight their mother.
But then they realized their problem: Sure, they could tear out the sheetrock, but how would they hang it and make it look good?
So instead of bumbling through the project themselves, they turned to a professional. Mclean had been using Angie's List for years, and quickly found a drywall contractor who could help them navigate the ceiling roadblock. The contractor got to work, and completed the job fast.
But then they had to find the perfect countertop and cabinets. Mclean and his sisters began researching potential options online, but the kind they settled on weren't in stock.
Again, they turned to Angie's List.
The contractors they found had the same options in stock, and installed them. "The finished product was better than expected. We went with an upgraded crown molding effect that was really nice, too," Mclean says.
In the end, their mom got a lovely new kitchen.
"We were extremely pleased with the results," Mclean says. "The ceiling was perfect and [the contractor] also had agreed to put some texture on the walls to cover some old patches as well. That was a big plus for our project. The best part is Mom loves her new kitchen."
