Second opinion finds fault in air conditioner installation
COMPLAINT: Cynthia Heaberlin, Carollton, Texas
"I hired Airtron/A-ABC Appliance & Air Conditioning in Dallas, which had installed four A/C units two years ago for my builder, to diagnose a unit that failed completely. Airtron's technician said it was low on Freon and had frozen up. He told me there was also a leak in the evaporator coil and it'd need a new one.
"The part was still under warranty, but it would cost $1,100 in labor to install. This didn't sound right, so I called another company that I know to be honest and reliable. They detected a leak in a valve in under five minutes.
"Basically, the problem was a bad weld on a valve Airtron [originally] installed. Airtron's technician didn't tell me it could be a valve leak. I had the other company fix it for $332 and asked Airtron to refund me their $89 diagnostic fee, since their diagnosis was incorrect.
"Additionally, I'm requesting reimbursement for the $332 repair since it was due to a valve being installed incorrectly. At the very least, the $140 Freon recharge fee the other company billed me should be reimbursed, since it wouldn't have leaked if the valve had been welded correctly.
"I have e-mailed Airtron twice with this complaint, but I haven't received a reply."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a $421 refund for the diagnostic fee, and the cost to fix the valve and replace the Freon."
Editor's note: Heaberlin informed Angie's List that Airtron refunded the $89 diagnostic fee. She considers the matter closed.
