Screened porch includes wide window ledges for owner's cats

On a recommendation from a family member, Saint Ann, Mo. member Donna Gamache originally hired highly rated Ideal Surroundings of St. Louis because a storm left her patio cover hanging. However, that turned into so much more.

After owner Joel Houchins tore down the patio cover, he built a deck over the old patio with a design that could be turned into a screened sun porch further down the road. Her screen room is now complete.

“I’m looking forward to sitting in the screen room with my dog at my feet, cats in the windows, and just enjoying that room,” she says.

Houchins did everything Gamache wanted in her sunroom, including building ledges in the windows for her cats to sunbathe.

“My cats love it,” she says. “They’ve been indoor cats their whole lives, and I’ve wanted that screened porch for 18 years. The cats get up and meow when I’m making my coffee in the morning because they want out there.”

Gamache is finishing cleaning up her vintage patio furniture and will put it in the sunroom when there’s no longer a threat of cold weather returning.

In addition to the screen room, Ideal Surroundings sided her house and garage, cleaned and topped her gutters, painted the doors, installed handrails to the front steps, built a custom shed, measured for and installed custom-folding doors inside the house and created a secure mail slot that goes into the house.

They also installed steps up the back terrace in the yard in a place that becomes slippery and problematic when Gamache walks her beagle, Bee, after rain or snow.

Gamache says Houchins was smart with her money, which allowed her to get so many projects done.

“I feel like I got a mansion for my money,” she says. “I stand in my backyard and look at the three buildings and think, ‘Wow, that’s mine. It’s what I wanted.’”
