San Antonio interior designer turns passion into career
Paula Stone got an early start in interior design by rearranging her friends’ bedrooms in grade school. “They’d get irritated, because we’d have plans to go roller skating or something and I’d get so busy [we wouldn’t go].” Stone says she was the only great-grandchild allowed in her great-grandmother’s living and dining rooms by herself, because Stone’s appreciation for design made her trustworthy.
Stone earned her bachelor’s degree in interior design and went into the industry immediately. She worked in different roles, including working as a buyer for a showroom and a partner in a company. “It’s interesting how what I learned impacted what I did next,” she says. “It made for an interesting and more extensive education.”
Owner Paula Stone of San Antonio founded Paula Stone Interiors in 2004 and has earned the Super Service Award every year since 2009.
She started her interior design business, Paula Stone Interiors, in 2004. She offers many services, including new interior design, interior makeovers and home staging.
Cynthia Heaton recently hired Stone for a design consultation. “[I was given] input on how to reuse and repurpose items that I currently have in my home,” the Harmony Hills member says. “I was able to get ideas for the most functional way to work my space so that my family could continue to grow into it.”
Stone says one principle she keeps in mind while working with clients is that it is the client’s home. “I don’t try to impose my own taste. If they want it colorful, it’s colorful,” she says. “My concern is to help them get what they want and show them their options. A lot of time most people don’t realize all their options. My purpose is to make it enjoyable for them.”
San Antonio member Mayra Moreno appreciates that Stone worked with her interests in mind. “She took the time to really get to know my style and vision,” she says. “She understood where my boundaries were, yet pushed me enough to think differently.”
When not working, Stone spends her time doing interior design for herself. She recently bought and restored a home in Fredricksburg. Stone also spends spare time helping her community by picking up debris on a three-mile stretch of road.
One of Stone’s most memorable jobs stemmed from staging a couple’s home. She says they liked the experience so much they hired her to decorate their home in Hershey, Pa. They flew her there for a week and she helped them shop for furniture and decor.
Stone says she enjoys the variety of her job. “I like always dealing with new situations. Even if it’s the fifth house I’ve done for the same client, it’s a different house,” she says. “I like the fact that there’s a credible change — new houses, new furniture, new people.”
The Super Service Award recognizes contractors and health care providers that have main- tained a stellar service rating on Angie’s List throughout the past year. Be sure to always check the List before hiring, however, as ratings can and do change.
