San Antonio house cleaner delivers eco-friendly sparkle
Michelle McKenna finds success in serving moms and protecting the earth. “I try to hire all moms, and I think that’s important because there’s nothing that’s in anyone’s house that’s more important than a mom’s kid,” says McKenna, owner of EarthWise House Cleaning Service.
The San Antonio company also embraces eco-friendly housework by using reusable microfiber and cotton towels and green cleaning solutions. “It’s citrus-based and so green you can drink it,” McKenna says. Except for tough stains such as soap scum or coated ovens, EarthWise uses natural products from the EcoSense line at Melaleuca. “There’s no green cleaner that’s ever going to clean an oven that’s really bad,” she says. When a customer signs up to use EarthWise regularly, employees initially use harsher products in the kitchen or bathroom if necessary and then switch to eco-friendly cleaners.

The green cleaning products come concentrated, so the company uses fewer bottles, says McKenna, adding that they recycle those bottles. “There are toxins on the floor from [traditional] products, and people have small kids and pets, and this does eliminate the toxins in those areas,” says McKenna, who charges $159 for a full cleaning of a home with three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. Customers can schedule cleanings as needed, weekly, biweekly, monthly, seasonal or for special occasions. EarthWise also handles organizing and laundry.
Member Dorothy Giberson of North Central San Antonio hired EarthWise because the company uses green products. “They charged per room, and they cleaned nine rooms,” she says, adding she paid $170. “This was a little bit more than I would normally pay for cleaning, but they did a really good job and it was chem-free.” The crew also impressed her with hard work and personal interaction. “I’d highly recommend them to someone, whether they were committed to eco-friendly or not,” she says.
McKenna’s 14 employees serve customers in all corners of San Antonio, she says. “I try to go see every house and meet the person so I can see the house and work to pair my girls up with the people who live there.” To make matches, McKenna considers location, if customers have kids or pets, what work they want done and if they speak English, Spanish or both.
Outside of work, McKenna enjoys attending her two teenagers’ extracurricular activities, working out, going to rodeos, gardening, dancing and playing with her dogs.
Before starting EarthWise in 2009, McKenna, who also owns rental property, worked for an attorney’s office. “I thought I can do this on my own,” she says. “I used to be a computer programmer, so I built my own website. One of my Angie’s List customers recommended us, and we haven’t stopped growing.”
SSA Criteria: Each year, Angie’s List awards this honor to companies that have earned an outstanding service rating, according to our members. In 2012, the criteria included a minimum number of reviews in a category during the reviewing year, maintaining an A average on those reviews, as well as a current and total overall A, and being in good standing with Angie’s List. In your locale, the minimum number of reviews was 5. About 5 percent of companies were eligible for the award. The SSA is based on a company’s previous service record, and ratings can change. Be sure to always check the List before hiring.
