San Antonio electricians shed light on lighting
Three highly rated San Antonio-area lighting contractors shed some light on the offs and ons of lighting projects.
What types of lighting does your company do?
Richard Stein: We do all types of indoor and outdoor lighting.
Billy Hill: We do new lighting, remodel and retrofit lighting packages, as well as repairs.
Dennis Nollkamper: We do all sorts of installations, any type of lighting a consumer would want.
What is the most efficient type of lighting, and what can customers do to save electricity and money?
Stein: LED is by far the most cost-saving type of lighting. Currently, the upfront cost is considerably higher, but the long-term advantage, in my opinion, makes it the much more effective way to go.
Hill: Compact fluorescent (CFL) and LED bulbs are the most common energy efficient bulbs on the market. Consumers can save money by having dimmers or occupancy sensors installed.
Nollkamper: The LED lighting is probably the most economical to run once it’s installed. The initial installation is still expensive, so the return on investment could take a while.
What should a consumer look for when ordering lights and hiring someone to install them?
Stein: Look for someone who has experience with the type of lighting you are selecting. It’s important to select the correct type of lighting for the area you want to light.
Hill: Choose the hue that best works. A bright white hue is great for active areas in your home, such as the kitchen. Warm hues are best used for setting a relaxing mood in areas like the den and dining room.
Nollkamper: Do their homework first. If they’re buying the fixtures, they need to have all the materials the service technician will need.
What are the prices for some typical jobs your company does?
Stein: Six-inch recess can light installed and wired is $165. LED lights range from $225-$415. Installation and wiring of a ceiling fan with a light costs $145.
Hill: This varies from basic change outs, which run $85, to complete lighting control systems, which can cost around $1,500.
Nollkamper: It depends on the job. Residential service calls are typically $150-$300. It just depends on what they want done.
