Sacramento homeowner wins free landscape design in raffle
When it comes landscaping, Sacramento, Calif. member Ed Escobar hit the lottery, literally. Escobar apprehensively entered his name in a raffle for a free landscape design at a home and landscape show. “I didn’t want to do it at first,” he says. “I didn’t want people getting my [personal] information.”
When he won, Escobar took the opportunity to start his landscaping overhaul. He says he wanted to update the lawn for over 10 years and winning the design pushed him to complete the work. “Over the past two or three years I started thinking how to budget for it,” he says.
Escobar says he had enough money at the time to bring the plans to life. He was originally going to use the money to invest in property, but cash buyers with deep pockets kept purchasing the properties he wanted.
He set out instead to take care of some things his home needed. “The neighbors’ houses were being updated and mine wasn’t keeping up,” he says. “I did some projects last year and wanted to do the landscaping this year.”
Escobar met with the designer to claim his prize. They worked together to put Escobar’s ideas on paper. Escobar says the original designs included a traditional fountain, but he suggested a rock fountain, similar to one he had seen before, and it’s one of his favorite features.
Once the design was set, Escobar shopped the plans and hired highly rated Salvador Murillo of Sacramento to take it from the blueprint to the yard. Escobar chose Murillo because his bid came in $7,000 below the other two companies he interviewed. “It gave me more money to spend on plants where other companies lacked,” he says.
The final cost was $15,000, about $5,000 less than Escobar budgeted. He says he already has a plan for the remaining $5,000 that includes a patio cover in the backyard.
Escobar certainly feels like he hit the jackpot with his new landscaping. “I like coming home to it, and I get nothing but compliments,” he says.
