Roofing essentials

A home’s roof is made up of many parts, all of which can cause problems if not installed or maintained properly. Here’s a look at some basic features and what can go wonky with the wrong roofing contractor.

  1. Chimney
  2. Flashing

The material around pipes, vents or other protrusions is a prime spot for damage or water leaks.
  3. Underlayment
  4. Sheathing/Deck
  5. Gutter

Gutters are susceptible to water buildup and ice damming.
  6. Downspout
  7. Truss
  8. Fascia

The front board along your roof line is easily damaged by moisture.
  9. Soffit

Small animals and insects are attracted to the wood beneath the roof overhang, so pay close attention to cracks, holes and rotting.
  10. Ridge vent
  11. Vent pipe
  12. Shingles

Discolored or curling shingles can be a sign that repairs will be needed soon.

the numbers in the picture don't have a corresponding reference in the article. You can't tell a soffit from a truss if you don't know beforehand.
