Reusable fence posts spark savings in Fairfield, Ohio
Angie’s List member Maxine Apke and her husband, Michael, of Fairfield, Ohio, had a fence installed in her yard about 20 years ago. A neighbor’s chain-link fence already lined the back of her yard, so she added a split-rail wooden fence along the sides of the lawn. But after 20 years, Apke says the fence’s posts were deteriorating and rotting from groundwater exposure and needed to be replaced..
She searched Angie’s List for locally owned contractors. After speaking with a representative on the phone and in person, she hired highly rated Fence Pro in Loveland, Ohio, to complete the work.
They gave Apke a $3,000 quote for the work, which also included a gate, but the final cost came in at $2,300.
“Originally, we were going to replace all of the posts on both sides of the yard,” she says. “When the gentleman came out to speak with us, he pointed to certain posts that were very sturdy and said, ‘You know, some of these posts have no damage to them or deterioration to them.’ It would save us money by keeping some of the older posts and continuing to use them.”
Apke says that impressed her.
“In my thoughts, that was a ‘wow’ factor,” she says. “A company could come out and not even suggest that. They could go ahead and replace everything without regard to our costs. That really told me something about their ethics.”
Apke’s favorite part of the project, besides having a fence that’s no longer rotting, is that her wildflowers made it through unscathed. “Back in my garden, I had wildflowers blooming,” she says. “I didn’t want anything to happen to them, so I roped it off. They were so sweet about it and very careful. They picked up their mess and their shavings and left the place very nice.”
