Removing little-used tub makes room for spacious shower

Member Susan Kentrup and her husband, Al, remodeled the bathroom in their Downingtown, Pa. home, but the couple didn’t get to enjoy the project as long as they originally planned. They moved to Loveland, Ohio, a year later.

“We thought we were going to be living there for a while,” she says. “I wish we would have done it sooner so we could enjoy it more.”

Susan says they planned to update the bathroom for several years, but only recently had the financial resources available to complete the job. They prioritized putting two children through college before they updated the bathroom. After they graduated, the Kentrups were ready for a change. “We had the funds and set ourselves a budget,” Susan says.

The most important aspect of the remodel was addressing the shower situation. The previous configuration consisted of a small, square shower with a Jacuzzi next to it.

The Kentrups never used the tub, and the shower was too small for comfort. They wanted to remove the tub and expand the shower. “It was just a matter of coming up with the right layout to make it happen,” Susan says.

Susan says they interviewed several contractors before they selected highly rated Paramount Plumbing of Downingtown to do the work. She said their quote was in the middle pricewise and she got a good feeling when they came to the house. She said they joined Angie’s List specifically to help find a good contractor for this job. “I thought it would be a good way to find someone who is responsible and follows through,” she says.

The project cost $23,000, which was a couple thousand dollars over their budget, but Susan says they were willing to go over a little bit for the tile and countertops they really wanted.

The Kentrups had a little over 10 months to enjoy their new bathroom before they moved. Susan said the new shower lived up to her expectations. “It was so nice and big,” she says.
