Reduce, reuse, redecorate! 4 eco-friendly tips
Redecorating your home doesn't have to mean compromising your style or your conscience. Here are some earth-friendly tips to help add flare to your abode without scorching the planet.
- Reuse and reduce by rearranging. Instead of buying new furniture, move it around or swap it out from different rooms. Not only will repurposing save you some green, it will keep discarded furniture from crowding the landfills. After all, the wildlife at the dump has no need for an IKEA armoire.
- Go au naturel. Look for linens and textiles made with organic materials and water-based dyes. Pillows, comforters and sheets made from organic cotton are free from potentially dangerous pesticides. So snuggle up and dream of fields aflutter with butterflies.
- Rethink rubbish. Pull inspiration from the recycling bins in your garage. Colorful glass bottles make lovely centerpieces or vases — just be careful not to serve the flower water when you have guests over for dinner.
- Mix it up with low-VOC paint. Adding a different paint color to the walls makes a big impact in your home and a low impact on the environment. Since there's no easy way to dispose of paint, only buy the amount you need. If you have leftovers, donate them to a local school or shelter. Everyone appreciates bubble-gum pink paint, right?
