Red countertops add flair to kitchen
Angie’s List member Linda Christen knew it was time for a change when it came to her kitchen. “I was tired of the boring countertops and pale wood cabinets,” the Hampton, Virginia, resident says.
The aesthetics weren’t the only thing that displeased her. “I love to cook and bake. In the old kitchen, I’d always have to move things to make space for the KitchenAid [and other equipment],” she says.
While Christen knew she wanted something new, she wasn’t sure what it was yet. After searching Angie’s List for remodelers, she found Virginia Beach-based The Gillen Company, who helped her create her new kitchen. “I had a few ideas, but it was [owner] Tim Gillen who brought them to life and made it all more cohesive,” Christen says. “Everything he suggested was perfect.”
Christen’s new kitchen includes bright red countertops, which she says she loves because they draw the eye. According to Christen, the kitchen’s layout also improved. “Now, I have an excellent prep area right next to the stove,” she says. “No more darting across the kitchen with chopped food to get to a skillet or pan. I also now have a huge expanse of countertop that’s always available.”
Christen says the cost stayed at the quoted $3,000 estimate, even though the highly rated company performed much more work than originally planned. Her estimate included Gillen building a cabinet, replacing the countertops and installing a beadboard wall.
According to Christen, Gillen also performed plumbing work in the kitchen sink, added crown trim to existing cabinets, replaced her receptacles and installed a pot hanger.
“My favorite part of the project was feeling that my kitchen was in good hands, and that I would be satisfied — OK, thrilled — with the end results,” she says.
