COMPLAINT: L. Ogden, Durham
"I hired Ludy Tree Care to hoist and straighten a willow tree, which is a focal point of my front yard landscape, because it was leaning heavily to one side. Mr. [Doug] Ludy, the owner, put a screw into the willow and another nearby tree, attached them to a metal cable and tightened it. They also pruned the tree significantly on the side that was leaning. Mr. Ludy said he thought the tree would live another 10 to 15 years.
A month after they pruned and hoisted it, the leaves started falling off. I called Mr. Ludy to have him look at the tree and tell me whether it was in shock or dead. He said it was dead. The county agricultural extension agent who looked at it couldn't find any other reason for the death except the pruning possibly combined with drought.
She said arborists do not prune trees during their growing season and was surprised Ludy did so. I asked Ludy Tree Care to take the tree down and replace it free of charge. Doug Ludy said no and refuted what the extension agent said."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like Ludy Tree Care to remove the dead tree and replace it with a new willow tree."
