Question by jtobis: price for installing a 220V line? install electrical outlet near garage for charging electric car
Answered by Kestrel Electric: $355 if the breaker panel is on the same wall, in the garage, as the charger.
Answered by Kestrel Electric: $355 if the breaker panel and car charger are on the same wall in the garage. They don't have to be on the same side of the wall.
Answered by LCD: Kestrel's number sounds right in the normal ballpark for a simple, straight-forward breaker and circuit installation - in "ideal conditions I would say, as my experience and word of mouth from people in the trade I talk to is this is more in the $500-1000 range, assuming your system has adequate power capacity and space for the breakers in the breaker panel. Those costs also do NOT include any repair to drywall and repainting if it is run in the walls rather than in exposed metal conduit on the inside face of the wall.
FYI, following are links to a number of previous questions about this and related 220V high capacity circuit additions - some related to electrci car charging, some for similar power demand new circuits, plus some of the latter listed questions deal with ballpark costs of adding a dedicated sub-panel if your main panel does not have the capacity or breaker slots available, or for upgrading your overall house power system (sometimes including incoming power utility supply "drop" wiring and meter) if necessary.
For instance in our area, I have heard of a few fast-charge installations where it ran $3000-6000 because the existing normally 125-150A household system could not handle the added load - which can run up to around 70-100A JUST for the charger with some makes and models, making it by far the largest load in the house - sometimes as much or more than the rest of the normal load combined. It is not just the fact the line is 220V that is the issue - it is that the faster chargers pull as much power (and hence amperage) as a range or electric dryer, which is a load most houses cannon handle with the existing panel - and in many cases not with the existing incoming service and meter panel either.
It is also important to remember you are talking long-term loads here - much more than the normal 15-45 minutes a circuit will see from a range or dryer - you are talking hours at a time at full power, and normally at times when you and family are asleep, so you do not want to pushing the capacity of the system and have an overheating and fire risk.
And fast-charging and multi-car chargers (to charge more than one car at the same time) wall-mount charging stations can run $1000 or more JUST for the wall unit and associated connecting cord with car charging "plug", so you definitely need to get the DETAILED info from the car manufacturer to provide to bidders, determine and spell out in the scope-of-work if you are providing any of the charging system components or if he is buying them all (and marking the cost up), and get several bids from different well-rated Electrical contractors from that Search the List category to be sure you are getting reasonable bids (both not too low or too high), because many wikll not have significant experience in installing these systems.
