Portland HVAC company misses deadline for rebate

Too late for a rebate

COMPLAINT: Jessica Depetro, Portland

"I hired Eagleton Heating & A/C to tear out an old oil furnace and ducting and replace it with a new gas furnace, new ducting and a new air-conditioning unit. They told me the job would take three or four days, but it took a month and a half. The technicians only came out once or twice a week, and twice they didn't even show up.

"Communication was very poor. I never knew, unless I persistently called them, when they would be out next. The technicians used several items around my home, including buckets, paintbrushes, tools and my fairly new drill. They were very forgetful and often cut corners. I completed the rebate paperwork, but because of the time it took for the work to be done, I missed the deadline for a portion of the rebate."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a $50 refund for the rebate deadline I missed. They told me I had a warranty for the labor, and I'd like that warranty in writing."

STATUS: Penalty Box

Ant annoyance

COMPLAINT: Carlin Jackson, Canby, Ore.

"I hired Barrier Pest Control to come out and take care of some ants. They did this just fine. I signed a contract for a year, which is six visits for $89 each. When I signed, there was no emphasis that I was getting a year's worth [of visits], or I wouldn't have signed for that. I thought I was signing a contract for three visits.

"I called to see if I could have the last three refunded because I wouldn't need them, but they wouldn't give that to me. They should make it a point to specify what you're signing for, because they don't give out refunds."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "Barrier should agree that I'm not required to have the [rest of the] visits, and that I don't need to pay $100 to cancel the contract without those visits."

RESPONSE: Ryker Smith, branch manager, Barrier Pest Control

"We're willing to waive the cancel fee, which is the reimbursement of his initial service discount, in the name of customer service. But, we will accept a payment of $89 for his third service, which has been completed but wasn't paid for."

STATUS: Resolved

Spa stress

COMPLAINT: Eric Bell, Portland

"I retained Geiger Pools & Spas for service and maintenance on my spa. The work would've been best performed if I'd read a how-to manual myself. Only after I had my spa serviced by Geiger did I start having problems: I was overcharged on maintenance products, and Geiger told me one of the two spa engines was cracked and removed it from my property without showing me.

"I'd also ordered spa pillows several months ago and have yet to receive them. After multiple calls, I've yet to hear back from the spa manufacturer or their certified representatives at Geiger Pools & Spas."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a refund for the pillows, the engine motor returned and damages due to non-communication and leaving work unfinished to be covered. I'd like Geiger to pay to have another company set up and run the spa."

STATUS: Penalty Box
