Portland company brings kitchen out of the 1950s

Company name: Neil Kelly Co.

Category: Remodeling - Kitchen & Bathroom

"Neil Kelly Co. gutted and remodeled my 1950s kitchen," says Eric Jacobson of Portland. "They enhanced the electrical and plumbing components; reinsulated the walls; painted; and installed new windows, drywall, custom cabinets, trim, crown molding, countertops, sinks, plumbing fixtures, a backsplash, doors, appliances and hardware. After the demolition, various subcontractors came through to carry out their missions, with few glitches. I inspected the work daily and communicated my findings and concerns to Brian Silver, the project manager, who quickly responded to any problems. They set up my old appliances in the garage for use as a temporary kitchen. It was difficult with paper plates, plastic utensils and two 100-pound-plus Bernese Mountain dogs, but everyone cooperated and it worked out well."

While hiring a licensed contractor doesn't guarantee quality work or service, it does offer homeowners protection. In Oregon, anyone who performs construction work for money must be licensed through the Construction Contractors Board.
