Plumbers share surprising stories from the field

Plumbers share their most memorable stories from the field. From Mickey Mouse clogging a toilet to a potty-trained cat, these stories are sure to entertain and surprise you.

Fix yields smile

Crestview, Fla. — “I had a call at a customer’s house about a clogged toilet. The mother had placed a sign over the seat with a frowning face that stated, ‘I tried to eat Jimmie’s pants and now I am sick,’” says Tom Paccone, owner of highly rated The Expert Touch. “I used my auger to retrieve the toddler’s clothing and [fix] the toilet. The mom promptly posted a new sign atop the toilet seat with a big smiling face! It was really cute.”

A sick situation

Frederick, Md. — “I was working on a homeowner’s sewer line,” says Joseph McKenzie, lead plumber with highly rated Tri-State Home Services. “I was down in a pit with the open sewer line we were repairing. The homeowner was home at the time — with the stomach flu. Despite my repeated pleadings, she continued to use and flush the toilet ... onto me.”

M-I-C-K-EWWW!

Fishers, Ind. — “I have a really great client with the sweetest 2-year-old boy,” says Mike Bush, owner of highly rated Mike Bush Plumbing. “The toilet was clogged up and the little kid was watching us work,” Bush says. “The mommy asked, ‘Did you flush anything?’ The boy answered no. When I flipped the toilet over, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were side-by-side peeking out. It was almost like they had their arms around each other, crawling out of the toilet together. My guys and I had a good laugh.”

Em-bare-assing request

Montgomery, Ill. — “We were working on a bathroom job another contractor had left undone,” says Liz Staller, owner of highly rated Liz Staller Design. “The new toilet had a rinse-off and air-dry system, so the client brought me into the bathroom and said (as the toilet lid automatically opened) ‘You gotta try this!’ He closed the door and left me in there. My thoughts were that I’d better have something to say about this! The toilet was actually really great. It just goes to show there are great technological strides even in the bathroom.”

Curious cat climbs wall

Claremont, Calif. — “During a bathroom remodel, we had all the walls open so we could replace the bathtub and piping,” says Gary Garcia Jr., owner of highly rated The Plumbers Connection. “We began to close up the walls and the homeowner couldn’t find her cat anywhere. We heard some scratching and meowing inside the wall. The cat was curious and crawled in behind the bathtub while we were working. We had to open the wall we’d just put in to retrieve it. Fortunately, the cat was unharmed and safe.”

Potty-trained feline?

Putnam Valley, N.Y. — “The customer showed me to the
bathroom and the door was semi-closed,” says Tom DePole, owner of highly rated Thomas DePole Contracting. “When I opened it, the cat was on the toilet! It kind of had an attitude, like ‘excuse me.’ Instinctively, I felt embarrassed and shut the door. The homeowner gave me a strange look and chuckled after I told her. She’d potty trained it. When the cat was finished with its business, I went on in and did my job. I didn’t check to see if it flushed.”
