Philadelphia builder walks off the job
COMPLAINT: Beth Monahan, Philadelphia
"I hired Building Doctors to remove old pavers and put in a patio pad and sidewalk. It went poorly from start to finish. The first team of subcontractors didn't show. The second team showed up after Will Bechtel [the owner] gave them a huge deposit and threatened to take legal action.
"From there it got worse. The subs didn't know what they were doing. Will would show up late, yelling at them and complaining to me that he was losing money on the deal.
"After the first rainfall, water accumulated two-thirds of the way down the pad, making for a nice tadpole swimming pool. I pointed this out to Will. He took photos, and then walked off the job. I still owed him half of the money, and redoing it correctly wasn't worth it to him.
"In addition, he double-parked his trucks against the protests of my neighbors, was careless about letting my dogs out of the gate and left cigarette butts and chicken bones in my yard. Ten days after walking off the job, he returned with his crew to throw concrete blocks from my project back into my yard and left a note saying he had no choice but to return my debris until I met my financial obligation."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a $2,100 refund to fix the patio and haul away the debris."
