Patio, seat wall and winding path transforms a backyard
Angie’s List member Laura Tucker and her family recently moved into a newly constructed home on a large wooded lot in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
“The cleared area in our backyard was a blank canvas,” Tucker says. “I took the first year to notice what we had to work with and to think and plan for this project. I looked at many pictures to gather ideas, mostly from library books.”
She decided on a patio, seat wall and long, winding path that she could landscape around for years to come. Tucker got estimates from four companies, but said highly rated Decorative Creations was the only one with a vision for the path she wanted to create and quoted the best price.
Decorative Creations, located in Matthews, allowed Tucker to be heavily involved in the planning process. In fact, they gave her the name of their suppliers for flagstone and seating wall materials. “I visited those businesses and made my selection,” she says. “Decorative Creations told me exactly what to ask for, which was helpful since I had never shopped for those materials before, and didn’t know the lingo.” She chose the materials based on color tone — grays and browns.
Tucker says her favorite part of the project was watching the contractor build the seating wall. “It was clear that the man doing the job had lots of experience with it, as he was very particular about the placement of each block and cutting it perfectly to make it all fit together just right.”
Everyone who has seen the new backyard loves it, according to Tucker. “It really is quite a transformation from what we had before,” she adds. “Now we have a great view from the windows on the back of the house and an interesting backyard that we can enjoy.”
