Patient pleads for fee to be waived due to MRI mistake
COMPLAINT: Jenifer Lucas, Gainesville, Va.
"The first time I visited the radiology department at Inova Health System's Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Va., they said they couldn't perform the MRI I needed without a prescription from my doctor for a blood test. I went back after I obtained the prescription. They drew the blood, and when I went in for the MRI, the technician said I was supposed to receive a different type of MRI that didn't require a blood test.
"At the end of that MRI, she realized I was actually supposed to have the other type of MRI and she'd need to reschedule for another day. I was furious, and I asked Fair Oaks to refund my co-pay [for the mistaken MRI], which they did. I called my health insurer to advise them not to pay for a service that wasn't prescribed. After the insurer reversed the charge, Fair Oaks wanted me to pay that sum, and they threatened to send the bill to collections. At no point did I agree to pay for an incorrect service."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I don't want to pay the $1,984 bill for the wrong service."
Editor's note: Lucas informed Angie's List that Fair Oaks reduced her bill to lab fees for the blood test only, and she considers the matter resolved.
