Old electrical panels pose threats to Boston homes

Updating an electrical panel can not only save energy, it can make your home safer. Highly rated electrician James deOliveira of JDO Electric recently offered his concerns for old panels.

deOliveira: "They can heat up due to over loading circuits in panel. Also, loose connections in panel cause heat points in panel which can lead to power failure, or even fire. Old breakers tend not to trip at overload conditions allowing unsafe levels of current to overload and heat up wires causing fire.

"Old panels also tend to have poor grounding systems which is a big safety issue for proper operation of you circuit breaker, and overall safety of your electric system. All new service upgrades also get new grounding system installed to size of service."
