NYC area dentists offer advice on cosmetic dentistry
According to a 2011 dentists survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, teeth whitening is one of the most commonly requested dental procedures, and the majority of dentists who perform whitening say they expect the trend to grow.
With so many Americans interested in a brighter, whiter smile, Angie's List spoke with two highly rated New York-area dentists to learn more about what patients should know about the procedure.
What should patients consider when requesting cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening?
"Function and health should be treated prior to cosmetics," says Dr. Marylouise Howatt of highly rated Madison Dental Group in New York. "Patients do want to look their best today, but prior to any cosmetic treatment such as whitening, orthodontics or veneers, the underlying health of the patients gums and bone is paramount. If this foundation is not healthy, cosmetic procedures just won't achieve the best results.
"Patients should ask their dentist: Is my mouth in the best health to achieve results with cosmetic procedures?"
Dr. Jay Schuster of highly rated Metro Dental Associates in Morristown, N.J., adds that patients must also be old enough for cosmetic procedures. "I've seen 10-year-old kids who want teeth whitening, but there has to be age restrictions," he says. "You want the teeth to be fully in place and healthy."
He adds that with the increase in dental practices offering cosmetic procedures, patients should consider using dentists with more specific experience. "The dentist should be certified in the procedure, and they should have done a number of the procedures," Schuster says. "Screen your dentist: Ask about their training, see if they went to a good dental school and look for someone who's completed a lot of continuing education."
