New home construction features minimalist design
Kensington, Maryland, Angie’s List member Aidan H. wanted his newly constructed home to be stylish, minimalist and include an emphasis on wood and stone. To that end, he enlisted highly rated archi-Textual of Washington to design the 1,800-square-foot contemporary residence.
Archi-Textual also incorporated the geometric curves and spaces that owner and architect Catarina Ferreira wanted. It also met the member’s request for the house to feature natural curves. He built the new home on the foundation of a pre-existing mid-century modern house.

“Catarina has a great appreciation for ensuring great light and using innovative material not often used in a residential setting,” Aidan says in a Page of Happiness-nominated review.
Building the new home took seven months, and during that time, Ferreira revised plans several times and nailed down every detail until she thought it was perfect. The architectural input cost $20,000.
“Catarina is happy to work both as the all-in architect and designer,” Aidan says. “In my case, she was able to deal with a highly involved homeowner who wanted input in every decision.”
In addition to creating the home Aidan wanted, Ferreira also kept his budget top of mind.
“Because she works as an architect rather than in association with a builder, I always knew that whenever discussions about details and prices came up with the contractor, Ms. Ferreira would be looking out for my best interest,” Aidan says.
Once complete, Ferreira’s hard work shined through.
“The final result is one I am especially happy with,” Aidan says.
