Need a Contractor to Cut and Modify a Piece of Granite for a Backsplash on Site

Answered by LCD: Sounds like your piece is loose - not yet installed, so just need a diamond saw cut, and some polishing - minor polishing and corner "breaking" if being butted up into a corner, full polish if it will be an exposed end. IF it is in-place and running long, then typically into the $500+ range AND means hunting around to find a contractor with the equipment to do in-place granite cuts - most do not have it, others do but will only use it on jobs they installed.
Awful small job - probably a minimum service charge of about $250 range by a Countertop contractor to come out and do it.
Is this small enough that you can protectively package it (best done between full-width wood at least 3/4" thick on each side - I prefer 2x facing pieces or 3/4 plywood scraps - with blocking very slighly thinner at each end with the facing scraps screwed to the blocks, then shrinkwrap or tape around the edges to prevent it from slipping out. Safer against cracking if the facing boards are wider, and you have a piece of 3/4" strip or blocking along the edges to holdthe stone in place and holdthe facing boards at the correct spacing to firmlyu support the stone all along its length. This provides a firm wood frame to transport it so it does not crack - but transport flat on a flat surface, or on edge if going down the center of a car along the center consoles. (Obviously, longer the worse breakage risk, and if stone is 1" or thicker is much more resistant to crackign than if the thin 1/2 or even thinner stuff a lot of people are using these days. Basically treat it as if it were glass and you should be OK.
Taken to a Countertop place (your Search the List category to find local ones with Angies List ratings and reviews) which has a fabrication facility, probably about $50-100 range cut and polish charge. Of course call and confirm up front - also whether they can handle on appointment or as a walk-in, or if this will be a dropoff and go back later to get it deal. If large/heavy enough that you need them to come get it and return it after the work is done, probably about $75-100 additional charge so getting up close to opsite cost then.
