Nashville travel agents give tips on booking vacations
Why should people plan a trip through a travel agency?
Ann Savage: "The biggest reason is if they have a problem during travel, they have a third party to help them."
Fred Waymack: "For the expertise and if something goes wrong you have a person to call for help."
Shawna Orman: "Travel agents know information about where to go and the best prices. Plus, if you get stranded, you have someone to call."
Who we talked to
Fred Waymack, owner
International Travel of Nashville Inc.
How do you charge?
Savage: "We don't charge consultation fees, the travel companies pay us. But we do charge for airline tickets."
Waymack: "We don't have any consultation fees, the suppliers pay us. But we do charge a $20 fee for airline tickets."
Orman: "Suppliers pay most of it, except for the airline tickets. We charge $30 for domestic and $50 for international."
What's the one travel tip you always give customers?
Savage: "It depends on where they're going. There's not any one thing I say."
Waymack: "Get travel insurance."
Orman: "Pack smart and be smart. Don't put anything of value in your checked luggage."
Do you recommend trip insurance?
What's one place you recommend everyone should visit and why?
Savage: "It depends on who they are. There's not one place everybody should go. Because it's very personal, we try to fit the trip with the individual."
Waymack: "There are so many wonderful places to go, they're all so different. I couldn't begin to say."
Orman: "I love New Zealand, but not everyone agrees to that. I think everyone should take a trip to a country that's less fortunate so you can really appreciate how much we have here."
What makes your agency better than others?
Savage: "Customer service, hands down."
Waymack: "I think our experience gives us an edge."
Orman: "We make sure people get what they want out of their trip."
What's the worst or funniest travel story you've heard?
Savage: "I was in the Cancun airport waiting for luggage, and there was a lady whose suitcase was hanging wide open with all of her underwear hanging out."
Waymack: "One of our agents went on a hotel inspection at the Hedonism Resorts in Jamaica. She was on the elevator, the doors opened and two naked men walked in."
Orman: "A lady asked me for an ocean view room at Disney World. Another guy wanted to rent a car and drive from Honolulu to Maui."
