Milwaukee travel agents give tips on booking vacations
Who we talked to
Why should people plan a trip through a travel agency?
Kay Berg: "I think service is the No. 1 thing. I think if you give good service you'll stay in business."
Lois Steliga: "When people purchase off a website they can't get the kind of information we give them. We actually plan and design trips."
Diane Fleming: "Because I think we're the specialists in many different areas. We're hands-on with the tour companies, and can make sure the experience is a good one."
Do you plan all aspects of customers' trips?
Berg: "Yes. We do Amtrak, hotels, cars, cruise, and international travel. We'll put a lot of things together."
Steliga: "We're primarily group tour operators, so we get into all of the details."
Fleming: "We do everything. We specialize in unique destinations and we add special things to see and meals."
How do you charge?
Berg: "We charge $30 for a domestic and $40 for an international airline ticket. But if you do a package we don't charge a fee because we a get a commission."
Steliga: "If it's our tour, our fees are built into the price already. If we're booking hotels, we get a commission. Generally, we don't get a fee from airlines so there's a nominal fee."
Fleming: "We have a consultation fee for some things and foreign travel. It takes a lot of time to put that together right."
Do you have a region or country you specialize in? If so, where?
Berg: "Australia and New Zealand. I also lived in Fiji and I've been to Tahiti many times. So the South Pacific as well. I also love Europe."
Steliga: "Probably more of the U.S. than anything. We do quite a bit of Ireland as well. Our people also enjoy small boat cruises in Europe and Russia."
Fleming: "We have different specialties. We have a lady that specializes in Australia and New Zealand, and others in the Caribbean and Europe. We work together as a team."
What's the one travel tip you always give customers?
Berg: "Remember to ask for what you want. If you have a problem, speak up and we can get it fixed. Don't let something go if it bothers you."
Steliga: "Take enough money and always have your passport. If you're going to another country, learn a little bit about it before you go."
Fleming: "The only trip you will regret is the one you didn't take."
