Whether you live north in Silver Spring or south in Falls Church, as a homeowner in the Nation's Capital, you’re looking for great service, especially with your plumbing needs and emergencies.
Here’s the latest Post of Happiness for great service from Washington D.C. plumbers as selected by the Angie’s List Newsroom staff.
Water heater woes
Kesterson Plumbing & Heating of Alexandria, Va. showed great customer service during a water heater repair for Gary Buffington. “I had an output problem from my hot water heater, which was purchased from Kesterson several months ago,” Buffington says. “They were very understanding and responsive to my concerns, testing the unit, contacting the manufacturer and eventually providing a resolution to the problem by adding a supplemental unit to assist in the output of hot water.
"This family-owned company truly believes in making the consumer happy regardless of what it means to their bottom line," Buffington says. "From the receptionists, to the repairmen, to the office manager, Mike Berry, they exemplify professionalism. They not only resolved my problem but sent a field supervisor out to my house to explain what they were going to do and why it would solve the issue. I could not be more impressed.”
Frozen pipe frenzy
W H Winegar & Son Plumbing and Heating of Burtonsville, Md. informed Josh Rabinowitz how to avoid frozen pipes in the future. “Maryland has pretty mild weather, but this winter was especially cold,” Rabinowitz says. “When temperatures dipped down into the negatives, I experienced pipes freezing and bursting. Luckily, it was only the pipe to the outside spout! Because the area was hit hard, I was placed on a waiting list. When I called, they were extremely kind, and even though they were crazy busy, the man on the phone took time to give me individualized attention.
"I received a follow up call two days later when they finally were able to get me on the schedule," Rabinowitz says. "Jim, the service technician, arrived promptly and reviewed the problem. He told me what to do in the future to avoid the problem and then got to work. The whole process took about one hour and 15 minutes, and then we chatted a little after the clock stopped.
"Jim was excellent," he continues, "He made sure to check all his work, turning the water back on and then off to drain the line, so it doesn’t happen again this winter. The process was painless, and I would be happy to give them my business again!”
Locating the leak
JCTHI Plumbing Services of Ashburn, Va. halted a ceiling leak in Yu Ling Wang’ garage. “It was the coldest night in history and my husband was out of town,” Wang says. “I came home that night, and there was lots of water leaking from the ceiling of my garage. I was terrified since I didn’t know what to do. First thing came to my mind was to go to Angie’s List and find a reliable plumber. I found JCTHI, and it was rated very highly by members. I called, and owner Juan Carlos Trujillo picked up the phone right away.
"He helped me find my main water valve and told me what to do to fix the water leaking," Wang says. "After I turned off the water valve and release the pressure, he said he will call me in 30 minutes just to make sure the water has stopped. Thirty minutes later he called and check in on me. I told him everything is fine. He then told me to put a space heater in the garage and said he will give me a call tomorrow morning to schedule an appointment to come by.
"The next day, he came by in the morning," Wang continues. "He was extremely courteous and professional. He found the broken pipe, replaced it, tested it and found another broken pipe. He fixed that one and told me to test it three hours later. I tested the water that night and everything is fine now. Despite the unpleasant leaking problem, it was such a pleasant experience dealing with Carlos. I heard so many horrible stories about getting bad plumbers who just want to take advantage of the homeowner’s misfortune. Carlos is totally the model plumber: He is reliable, has strong work ethics, polite and professional. I also want to thank Angie’s List. This incident alone paid for my Angie’s subscription.”
Michael & Son Services Alexandria, Va. of rescued Karen Randle from unexpected cold showers. “When I started my shower in the morning, there was no hot water,” Randle says. “After checking to make sure no circuit breakers were off, I thought the hot water heater was broken.
"I called Michael and Son, and a technician was scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. the same day," Randle says. "Mike Miller arrived about 10:30 a.m. and determined the hot water heater was not the culprit. I had a frozen pipe as the temperature was minus 2 degrees. Mike started applying heat to the pipes and told me I could use a hair dryer to help. Mike had to cut a hole in the drywall to access the elbow of the pipe, but eventually it thawed and hot water was restored.
"Unfortunately, we found that the builder had not put any insulation between the outside wall and the pipes, which is something that will have to be addressed. I told him I was a member of Angie’s List, and he immediately asked me to print the coupon so he could take 10 percent off the invoice. All in all, I was very pleased with the service I received and the price I paid. I would definitely use Michael and Sons services again.”
