Maryland landscaping company makes the cut
Jeff Potter mowed lawns while attending the University of Maryland to help pay his way through college. He liked it so much, he ditched pursuing a financial career so he could stay outdoors. “I decided I really liked this, and we were continuing to pick up clientele,” says Potter, who works with his brother, Greg, the company’s vice president.

Owner Jeff Potter and his brother, Greg, started the business in 1989 and earned the Super Service Award in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Today, Spencerville, Md.-based J&G Landscape Design boasts 35 full-time employees. Jeff Potter doesn’t regret the decision. “I was going to go into banking, but during that time [late 1980s], the financial markets weren’t doing too well,” he says. “It started with two brothers cutting grass in the neighborhood, and it just kind of grew.”
The brothers started their business out of their parents’ garage, and now work from their own facility. Jeff’s proud of the company’s employee retention, saying his average foreman has been with the company for more than 15 years. “We’re looking for employees who are here for a career,” he says. “All of our guys have been here a long time. We treat every co-worker and every piece of equipment as we’d want to be treated.”
The company stays busy in the winter by focusing more on performing grading and drainage work. Kensington, Md. member Steven Mathis turned to J&G to resolve water issues on three sides of his house, turn his cracked, one-car driveway into a two-car driveway, and perform extensive landscaping work. “They specialize in this kind of work, and not only did they solve the water problem, but we now have people driving by admiring our landscaping because it looks so good,” Mathis says.
Jeff, a Maryland-certified professional horticulturalist, owns a certificate in landscape design from George Washington University and says he’s on track to earn a master’s degree from GWU in sustainable landscape planning. He says he blends the knowledge culled from his studies with job experience to do the best job for his clients. “You’re taking your field experience that’s so vitally important and able to tie those things together,” he says. “It really increases their quality of life. You fix a drainage problem for someone and they’re not waking at night in panic — that’s what makes it feel good.”
April Lesho and her partner, Sally Williamson, can vouch for J&G’s abilities after they excavated and waterproofed the couple’s basement. “We discovered we had mold and moisture issues in our basement one day after moving in, and Jeff was the only [contractor] who looked at our entire property to resolve our issue,” Lesho says. “I was beside myself when I saw how spectacular the yard and finishings looked.”
The Super Service Award recognizes contractors and health care providers that have maintained a stellar service rating on Angie’s List throughout the past year. Be sure to always check the List before hiring, however, as ratings can and do change.
