Marietta carpet expert offers purchasing advice

When Don and Elisabeth Stubbs founded Enhance Floors & More in 1985, they provided floor sales and maintenance, carpet cleaning and maid service. In the early 1990s, they sold the maid service and focused on flooring.

"New floor covering is something you only purchase a few times in your life," Stubbs says. "It's a big investment and you don't want to make an expensive mistake. Our goal is to help clients select the perfect floor covering for their lifestyle, décor and budget."

What should I look for to ensure I purchase lasting, high-quality carpet?

"There are many important factors to consider. Like baking a cake, if three ingredients follow the recipe and the fourth is different, then you have a different result. It's a matter of matching what is most important to you and your budget.

"Fiber type is important because some fibers are more stain resistant than others and some wear better than others. You can get synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester, or natural fibers like wool or grass. Pile refers to the look of the carpet. There are cut and looped piles and many different styles. Pile is important because different construction methods cause the carpet to perform in certain ways. A loop carpet is going to wear better because it's woven flat to the backing as opposed to a cut pile, which fights gravity everyday to keep from matting and crushing. Twist has an important role in the look of the carpet. A tighter twist is better for wear, but it looks totally different than a carpet that isn't tightly twisted. You have to decide what's more important to you, whether it's the wear or the look of the carpet.

"The quality of carpet and the quality of padding go hand in hand. You can't expect to purchase an inexpensive carpet and the most expensive pad, and expect that the carpet will perform twice as long. However, the better the pad, the longer before the carpet begins to show wear.

"A high quality carpet will look good, given proper maintenance, for 10, 15, even 20 years. Most carpet is not replaced because it's worn out - it's usually to change color, styling, or for other aesthetic reasons. So much is determined by the amount of traffic the carpet gets, and the care and maintenance it receives. An entry level carpet can start looking bad in as little as three or four years, especially on high traffic areas - like stairs.

"Most importantly, make sure you get something you like. If something isn't attractive to you, it doesn't matter how well it wears - you still won't like it."
