If it’s a lush, green yard you’re looking for when purchasing a home in Chicago, you’re probably best to head to the suburbs.

Green space in the city is scarce, and comes at a high price. But there are landscaping options, and one Old Town family decided to look up to create their own urban oasis for their two small children.

A touch of the suburbs in the city

Earlier this year Deanna O’Connell contacted highly rated Chicago Dream Grass about installing artificial grass on the rooftop deck space of her Wellington Avenue single-family home. With no yard to speak of, it was their only choice.

“We have seen grass used on garage decks and roofs throughout the city, and thought it would be great to give our kids a big yard without having to move to the suburbs,” says O’Connell.

A place to play

According to their website, Chicago Dream Grass has been installing artificial rooftop and deck lawns across the city since 2005. Benefits of a rooftop artificial lawn include a low-maintenance way of beautifying the cityscape, providing an extra insulation layer to the home and creating new and safe spaces that the whole family can enjoy.

O'Connell's new $6,500 rooftop lawn has become quite the play area for her boys. "Our kids love using the area and they spend a lot of time (out there)," she says. "We have a playhouse, a sprinkler that they run through and even a 10-foot inflatable pool on the roof."

Cost and maintenance

Chicago Dream Grass offers a variety of options and price points. Prices start at $4.19 per square foot all the way to $6.45 per square foot for the pet-friendly grass, which the O'Connell's chose. Pet-friendly grass allows for nearly 100 percent drainage of water and pet urine.

"We have a dog, and so far the doggy waste pick up is much easier," O'Connell says. "For whatever reason the waste doesn't stick and it doesn't leave a mess, like real grass."

As for regular maintenance, an annual raking is all that’s needed to keep the grass blades upright, though for pet owners an occasional power wash with a light detergent may be required.
