Louisville travel agents give tips on booking vacations

The Sky's the Limit
Why should people plan a trip through a travel agency?
Lynette Schneider: "Working with an agent is going to get you a better price and something that will be a good value for the money. The expertise of a travel agent, since we're traveling to the destinations, is that we have more experience."
Berenice Milligan: "When you book through website, you're not in a relationship with an actual vendor. If something goes wrong, by using an agency you'd be able to go back to the agency with one phone call. You need to have someone you can fall back on that will lead you in the right direction."
Brenda Daisy: "There's so many things going on with the industry, the Transportation Security Administration regulations and any kind of weather, we're kept abreast of all changes. If anything goes wrong, you also have the support of our 24/7 call center."
How do you charge?
Schneider: "For most business, it's paid to us by commission from the vendors. We normally charge a $25 fee for airline tickets."
Milligan: "We're mostly paid commission by vendors. When it comes to airline tickets, we operate based on service fees."
Daisy: "We're paid a commission by our vendors, so it's mostly free to the consumer. If it's a complex trip, we'll let them know if there's a plan-to-go fee."
How far in advance should people plan trips?
Schneider: "If you want to book a trip for this year or next, book it now."
Milligan: "It needs to be booked about six months in advance."
Daisy: "Once you've set a date, allow at least three to six months."
What's the one travel tip you always give customers?
Schneider: "Wear slip-on shoes because you'll have to take them off at airport checkpoints."
Milligan: "Research the country you're visiting before you depart."
Daisy: "We constantly remind everyone about the TSA's three 1-ounce container allowance."
Do you recommend customers get trip insurance?
Schneider: "Everybody should have trip insurance."
Daisy: "Definitely, if you need to use it, you'll be glad you had it."
What's your favorite destination?
Schneider: "I've been to Ireland four times and the Bavarian Alps are wonderful."
Milligan: "Jamaica - it's kind of my home away from home."
Daisy: "I like warm beaches, like in the Caribbean."
