Los Angeles area plumbers reveal interesting causes of clogged drains
When it comes to clogged drains, two culprits typically rise to the top of the list — grease and hair, according to Los Angeles-area plumbers. There also is an interesting list of second-rate players that cause havoc with bathroom and kitchen drains across the city.
Those green plastic army men that have been a staple in children’s toy chests have been among the many toys found in drains, says Raffi Bardakjian, owner of highly rated California Green Plumbing in Glendale, Calif.
Jennifer Campos, vice president of highly rated Rick Campos Plumbing and Heating, says the company’s plumbers have found everything from cell phones and kids' toys to shampoo caps and razors in bathroom toilets, sinks and tubs. However, the two main causes of clogged drains are grease buildup in the kitchen and hair in bathroom drains.
Campos says it is important to adopt simple daily habits to keep drains from clogging. “Throw grease in the trashcan before washing dishes in the dishwasher,” she says. Brushing your hair before showering can also help prevent drained clogs in the bathroom.
She also warns homeowners against taking the do-it-yourself route when confronted with clogged drains. Many products sold at supermarkets can cause more damage than good. “Drano is not really a good option because it can eat through the pipes,” she says.
Bardakjian says whatever you put down the drain comes with a price. “Be careful what you put down the drain. It’s going to cost you money.”
