Lawn service cultivates satisfaction in San Antonio

Friends Joanne Rigdon and Hank Morgan met when he purchased her RV. After building a deck on her new RV and developing a friendship, they decided to start The Lawn Barber more than three years ago. Most of their first clients lived in the RV park where she resides permanently and he owns a second home.

“The property’s rather large,” says Morgan, who worked in architectural and design construction for 30 years. “Caretakers do basic service, but a lot of people are snowbirds and want their property to look good year-round, so we do plants and shrubs.”

Word of mouth brought in customers from around northern San Antonio seeking lawn services such as weekly yard maintenance, seeding, aerating, lawn restoration and sodding and landscape design, Rigdon says. While the company has grown, they continue to focus on serving Bulverde, Spring Branch and Boerne.

The Lawn Barber

Joanne Ridgon and
Hank Morgan co-own The Lawn Barber of Bulverde, Texas, which won the Super Service Award in 2012.

“We’ve had to limit our service area, and we’re still a small company,” she says. “I think Hank is a large part of [the success]. He’s a very outgoing, charismatic person. He personally checks all the work and he’ll go back until things are the way they should be.”

Member Lisa Miller hired The Lawn Barber to trim bushes and mow the grass. When she and her mother, Armandina, sustained injuries in a car accident, Lisa says The Lawn Barber sent get-well cards to their northside San Antonio home.

That gesture solidified the pair’s enthusiasm for The Lawn Barber, which they use for regular lawn upkeep. “My mother is very meticulous about the yard,” Lisa says. “They’ll even drive by to see if the grass needs cutting.”

Rigdon, a retired veteran who served in Desert Storm, works inside taking calls and running the business while Hank and his crew perform the outside work, which doesn’t require a license.

When the lawn care business tapers in the winter, The Lawn Barber offers holiday light hanging in November and December and light removal in January, Rigdon says. “When we started, we knew lawn maintenance would slow down, so we did Christmas lights,” Rigdon says. “In March, we got started again.”

The hot climate keeps The Lawn Barber busy on yard work the rest of the year, when Morgan delves into xeriscape designs — drought tolerant plantings for his customers that don’t require much watering — and custom landscape designs.

Member Juan Viera of North Central San Antonio relies on Morgan and his crew every other week for work that includes grass and bush trimming, mulching and fertilizing. “They do really make sure you are 300 percent satisfied,” he says. “They take care of my property like if it was theirs. They give style and character to your lawn by making sure it’s the best looking one in the block.”

The Super Service Award recognizes contractors and health care providers that have maintained a stellar service rating on Angie’s List throughout the past year. Be sure to always check the List before hiring, however, as ratings can and do change.
