Landscaping makes L.A. backyard a favorite place to be
“Our yard is a place filled with life — one where we want to spend our lives as well,” says Tujunga, California, member Matt Walker.
This wasn’t always the case. When he and his wife, Christina, purchased their home in 2011, they had a punch list. They wanted to deal with foundation, roofing, plumbing and electrical issues first.
“However, over time, we noticed that we had a very large backyard, but did not spend much time in it,” he says. “Finally, we decided it was time to take action.”
Looking for an affordable landscaping plan, they contacted highly rated Alexander’s Landscaping of Sunland, California, for a bid based on their local reputation, but hired them for their professionalism and approach. “Other landscaping companies would talk in very broad terms about the design. We had a budget in mind, and many of the landscaping companies wouldn’t even come to the house if they felt our budget wasn’t enough for them,” he says. “Alexander’s Landscaping was totally different. They met with us and discussed what we wanted first, did a design, and then we talked about the budget. It was about making a space for us, and not just about numbers.”
The final cost was about $17,000 and Walkers took some time off work to watch the project, which Alexander’s welcomed. Their favorite part was seeing the yard transform, especially through plant placement.
Matt says visitors are amazed by the yard overhaul and say they could spend hours in it watching the play of colors and textures as wildlife goes about their day.
Matt and Christina feel the same way. “After a long day at work, we can eat outside and watch the colors of the setting sun dance across the yard and the birds take their last sips from the fountain before they retire to their roosts,” he says. “It reminds us that there is so much more all around us; we see patterns form as we observe the life in our yard.”
