Landscaper transforms an unsafe, ugly backyard
Angie’s List member Emily Merrill and her family have lived in their Chicago home for two years, and little by little, they’ve been making upgrades to their space.
One project they’d been avoiding, however, was improving the backyard’s landscaping.
“The yard was a mess of weeds, dirt, stumps, broken/uneven cement, buried bricks, and a 12-inch-deep step to get to the back door,” Merrill says. To tackle the backyard project just seemed too expensive and overwhelming, considering the shape it was in.
But Merrill finally got fed up with the yard, which was a “terrible” place for her toddler, and contacted a few contractors for estimates. To her surprise, the quotes that came in were relatively inexpensive and had a short timeframe. With this knowledge, Merrill and her family leapt at the opportunity to improve their space.
“Less than a week later, [we] had the backyard of our dreams,” she said.
The family settled on a curved paver brick walkway, a step area created from various kinds of stone for the back door entry, crushed red gravel to even out areas around the tree roots, and some nice, large areas of sod.
The backyard has been completely transformed and is now functional and beautiful.
“Now we spend time in our backyard almost every day,” Merrill says. “Our 15 month old can safely play, and we feel comfortable inviting over other young children. We can set up chairs or a picnic blanket, grill, and entertain family and friends. “We could not be happier with the results.”
