Kansas City handyman at odds with homeowner
Didn't respond to Lois Trayford's request for a refund for what she says was unsatisfactory work on her ceiling fan. Third month in the Box.
COMPLAINT: Janie Crane, Blue Springs, Mo.
"I hired Carpet Direct Warehouse [in Kansas City, Mo.] to install new carpet around my entire house and tile in my entry upstairs and downstairs. Although the work they did was done well, they never finished the job and lied to me about their arrivals to finish. I have the materials they asked me to purchase for the rest of the job, and they're just sitting around. They've led me on, and they never called me back. It's been a nightmare."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want them to install a threshold and door sweep at one door and add finishing at two other doorways."
COMPLAINT: Chris Phillips, Overland Park, Kan.
"Handyman Connection [in Merriam, Kan.] gave me an estimate on having my garage walls mudded and painted. They were also supposed to hang bedroom and closet doors. They never showed up or returned my calls. They had my credit card number on file from a previous job, and they charged me $800 but never did the work. The man that came out [for the estimate] also wanted a key so he could come and go as he pleased."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a refund of $800."
RESPONSE: Della Hernandez, general manager, Handyman Connection
"We received a letter in the mail regarding the member. We've gone to his home and done work on three separate occasions, and we have signed invoices from him for each project we completed. At no time did he dispute the charges we ran on his credit card.
We gave the member a written estimate prior to the start of each project, and he agreed to allow us to complete each project as it was bid. We didn't bill his credit card until the jobs were completed and approved. We therefore don't acknowledge any need to give him a refund, but his warranty is still in effect."
