Kansas City carpenters rebuild homeowners' old deck

Angie’s List member Sandi Grimm and her husband, Jim, loved their multi-level deck, but knew it was on its last leg. The Grimms built their Blue Springs, Missouri, home in 1978 and added the deck about 10 years later. “We have been replacing boards when needed all along,” she says. “This year, we decided just to replace the whole deck.”

The Grimms received a recommendation from their painter, who has maintained their home’s looks since it was built. He suggested they call highly rated Builtright Construction Services in Kansas City, Missouri. Sandi called and soon hired Builtright for the job.

Sandi says the two crew members had degrees in art and engineering, along with a good work ethic. “Our neighbors commented on how hard the crew worked and how well they cleaned up after themselves every day,” she says.

In about two weeks, the crew tore down the old deck and built the new one. “They put routed edges on the corner posts and added needed support on the upstairs deck,” she says. “They also added several decorative end caps where the rails met the house, which made it look a little more finished.”

What really sold her, she says, had nothing to do with their work. “When it was all over, they handed me a block of wood from the old deck that they had cut out. It had a heart scratched on it that my husband put there about 25 years ago,” she says. “It was just a thoughtful touch.”
